Okay, so it’s been pointed out to me that I have been rather “preachy” or depressing and long.  Which is so not me… I’ve been compared to a Christian Erma Bombeck or a Patsy Clairmont in my ability to make fun of my mistakes and show how God has changed me and moved to change situations.  Definitely not as good as they are, but my humor is kind of the same.

I mean, I could totally see myself doing what Patsy did when she followed the service man through the airport to see how his family reunion went.  And crying at how beautifully it went.  Because, you know, I’m a part of it, too!  Laughing out loud right now! I find myself asking my husband to go see about things and he just shakes his head and stops me from being nosey and inserting myself in their lives…  I come by it honestly as my mother, whom everyone in the world loves, knows no strangers.  She speaks to everyone as though they are her long-lost best friend.  And they respond!

So let’s look at what the Bible has to say about laughter today.

Genesis 21:6

Sarah said, “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.”

I love this verse!  My friend has a handicapped daughter who is wonderful!  And when she gets to laughing, everyone in the room, and I mean everyone sees the joy on her face and can’t help but laugh along with her.  Even as I write this, I can picture her beautiful face and it makes me grin from ear to ear.  You can’t be sad when you’re around such infectious laughter!

Proverbs 14:13

Even in laughter the heart may be in pain, And the end of joy may be grief.

EVEN in laughter… this means to me that even though I am going through something painful and difficult, I can still be in laughter.  I have some friends who are going through some extremely painful times right now.  And I watch as one of them laughs her way through, while the other can’t get past her grief.  I can totally tell you that the laughing one will get through much stronger and faster than the one who just can’t see past the situation to the other side.

And finally, Proverbs 17:22

A joyful heart is good medicine, But a broken spirit dries up the bones.

I remember some years back that I went to a Christmas breakfast where the infamous Luci Swindoll was speaking.  She spoke about a bad diagnosis from the doctor and how she went about combating that disease.  She read in Proverbs how we are to be joyful in spirit and laugh in the middle of trials.  She didn’t want her bones to dry up on top of what was already wrong, so she went to the video store (ya, we’re old), and rented every last episode of I LOVE LUCY.  She said that was the funniest thing she could think of to make her laugh.  And of course, God held her up, gave her joy in the midst of her pain and she came though that time in her life with flying colors.  And if you’ve never heard Luci speak, she is hilarious! I looked on YouTube, but they mostly had serious clips of her except this one… LUCI SWINDOLL.

So I think we can agree that it’s time to get back to laughter and antics.  And it’s about time I got back to be silly, funny ole me and you!
