So let’s recap. We’ve covered the where you start praying and how important that appointment with God is. We need to be intentional about keeping that appointment every day. And we’ve covered the first two parts of the Lord’s prayer model – Adoration and Confession.
So today, we are covering the last two parts of prayer and the what then question. I hope you are liking the songs. In my presentation of this, I had more songs so people could look them up themselves, but because of time I couldn’t put it in the actual teaching. And again, some of the songs are very silly or cute or rockin’ so you don’t get bored… (Don;t forget, the links to the songs work…)
T = Thanksgiving, Thanks for the cross, thanks for your love, thanks for my family, thanks for my church, thanks for the Holy Spirit, thanks for your guidance, thanks that You have a plan for me… and again, the list goes on and on and on “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6 “ Always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;” Ephesians 5:20 “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 “15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15 “ But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:57
Okay, so the scriptures tell us on more than one, more than two, more than three occasions to pray and it is coupled with Thanksgiving. Well, have you ever given someone an amazing gift? And they never wore it; or they never said thank you; or the thank you note you got said “thank you for the gift.” Period. Not “Thank you for the amazing bracelet. I love it so much. It will go really well with my blue dress and those new blue shoes I got. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness.” It’s the same with God. He has given us ALL things, so shouldn’t we be thankful for everything He’s already done, already handed out, already lavished on us? How much we need to appreciate and thank Him then the girl who gave us the bracelet. And with thanksgiving comes tons of blessings. One of the scriptures we read has victory attached to our thanksgiving. If you do a study, for those of you who want to do this, Bible Gateway has Nave’s topical index, you will find so many interesting things about what thanksgiving ushers into our lives. It’s amazing.

S = Supplication, Requests, Cares, Concerns, Worries, Desires, Problems, I need Your Help, I need Your guidance… … “And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” Matthew 21:22 “Casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7 “But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith!” Matthew 6:30
Obviously God wants us to come to Him with our needs. But He also tells us that He knows what we need before we ask it in Matthew 6:8. So if He already knows, why does He want us to come to Him with our questions? Easy, because He wants us to feel comfortable with Him; like He’s our dad and we need His help with something.
“But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to say.” Matthew 10:19 Here is an example of how prayer can help your anxiety of speaking who God is planning on sending you to… He say right here that you don’t have to know what to say, He will provide the words and shut you up when you need to be quiet. (Exodus 14:14)
Most of us are hung up about our finances or our retirement. Francis Chan has a very short video on YouTube which illustrates the point of this. It’s about eternity. So he comes on stage with this long rope that curls and twists and appears to never end because it goes backstage. The very first 3 inches are dipped in paint. He explains that this painted tiny end is the time here on earth. And he goes on to explain that for of our time here on earth we are working hard so that the last 1/8 of an inch can be lived in comfort. And we neglect eternity which stretches on and on and on. God also commands us in Matthew 6, “ Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” And yet, here we are worrying about our future. But God promised that we would have what we need. Our safety net is in God, our provider and not in the almighty dollar of our culture. We are to depend on Him and on Him only. So What Now? “They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Acts 2:42 “These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.” Acts 1:14 “But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” Acts 6:4 “First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men,…” 1 Timothy 2:1 “Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;” Colossians 4:2
Now that we’ve acknowledged that God is One of a Kind, the He is higher and smarter than us; that His Plans are far better than ours. Now that we’ve Confessed our hearts and asked Him if there is any wicked way is us that needs to be brought to light and worked out through the Holy Spirit’s gentle touch; now that we’ve thanked God for what He’s done and what we have and His love. Now that we’ve asked Him for our needs, what now?
We need to commit intentionally to prayer, we need to commit our lives to storing up eternal treasures. This includes laying down our lives and letting go; lifting our lives up to God for God’s use. We need to seek after God’s heart, seek after His ways until we are souls on fire for God. We need to allow God’s Holy Spirit do a work in us, even when it’s uncomfortable (and it usually is.) Then we need to shine in our areas, where maybe nobody would ever see, ever be witnessed to. And we need to have courage and faith because if god asks us to DO SOMETHING He will give us the words, the power, the desire to carry it out.
Let’s NOT keep on neglecting the work we are to do in order to unleash God’s power. Let’s make together a commitment to encourage each other on in prayer. God says, “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.” James 1:22-25
What is god telling you to do; where is He telling you to move today?
